I believe that safe driving can be promoted in several different ways that do not punish drivers. Firstly, it is vitally important to educate people properly before they start to drive, and this could be done in schools or even as part of an extended or more difficult driving test. Secondly, more attention could be paid to safe road design. For example, signs can be used to warn people, speed bumps and road bends can be added to calm traffic, and speed cameras can help to deter people from driving too quickly. Finally, governments or local councils could reduce road accidents by investing in better public transport, which would mean that fewer people needed to travel by car.

Unusual British festivals

Hello. I’m going to talk about British festivals. I’m sure you’ve heard about the Notting Hill Carnival in London and the Edinburgh Festival, but today we’re going to look at a lot more that you might not know about. Actually, a lot of these are not exactly festivals, but strange races or competitions. Some of them are ancient and some are modern.

Carnival = Festival :

Actually:

ancient : باستانی ، کهن =Old

So, let’s start in January in the north of Scotland with the Burning of the Clavie. This is a whisky barrel which is set alight then carried through the streets as a bonfire. It’s an ancient tradition which always takes place on 11th of January, the first day of the year, according to an older form of the calendar. The bonfire brings good luck for the coming year and people used to keep bits of burnt wood as protection against evil spirits. At the end of January, even further north, in the Shetland Islands, there’s another fire festival, the Up Helly Aa. This seems like an ancient festival, but has actually only been going for about 130 years – well, it is fairly old, I suppose. People carry fire-lit torches and a Viking boat through the streets, then set fire to the boat. There’s lots of dancing; it’s good fun.

whisky barrel : بشکه ی ویسکی.

is set alight

bonfire

take place
Occur = Happen

calendar

bits

burnt wood

further north

fairly old

fire-lit torches

Now to the north of England. On Shrove Tuesday in February, otherwise known as Pancake Day, a special Pancake Bell is rung in Scarborough. Everyone goes down to the road next to the beach where they skip – yep, they jump over long ropes, up to fifteen people to one rope. And they have pancake races. This is quite common in the UK – running with a frying pan and tossing a pancake at the same time.

jump over long ropes :

Another kind of race takes place in spring – cheese rolling. In Gloucestershire, in the south-west of England, round cheeses in round boxes are sent rolling down a hill and people run after them and try and catch them. The hill is very steep, so people often fall over – if you take part in this you need to be very fit and wear your oldest jeans. Nowadays this strange custom attracts visitors from all over the world, but the people from the local village are usually the ones who catch the cheese.

fall over : افتادن .

take part : شرکت کردن Participate

fit : مناسب .

custom : سنت .

From people-racing, to animals, very tiny animals. World Championship Snail Racing takes place in a village in Norfolk. The snails have to race from an inner circle to an outer circle and the winner gets a lot of lettuce. There’s a party and barbecue for the snail owners and observers. This custom began in the 1960s after a local man saw something similar in France. In the UK we don’t eat snails, by the way.

Snail :

by the way : ضمنا ، بهرحال .

More fun, in my opinion, are the onion-eating contest, also in Gloucestershire – a race to finish eating a raw onion – and the Black Pudding Throwing Championship, in Lancashire. Black puddings are like big sausages made mainly from dried blood. Contestants bowl three black puddings each at 21 Yorkshire puddings set on a six-metre platform; the winner is the one who knocks down the most. Another fun contest takes place in September at the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria in the north of England. The World Gurning Championship is a competition to pull the ugliest face. It sounds ridiculous but this is an ancient British tradition and the Crab Fair itself dates back to 1267. The man who won the title of best gurner the most in recent years had all his teeth taken out so he could make terrible faces more easily.

onion-eating : پیازخوری.

contest : مسابقه .

raw onion : پیازخام .

Black Pudding Throwing :

Contestants :

The World Gurning Championship:

to pull the ugliest face :

dates back : برمیگرده به .

Finally, let’s go back to the south of England. In Brighton there’s a Burning the Clocks Festival to celebrate the winter solstice on December 21st. This custom started twenty years ago and is very popular. People make clock lanterns and time-themed figures of paper and wood, then walk through the town to the beach where the sculptures are set on fire and there’s a massive firework display.

solstice : تحول.

lanterns : فانوس ها.

time-themed : تم زمانی.

sculptures

massive firework display:

So, that’s just a taste of a few of our old and more modern traditions. Would you like to take part in any of them?i

There are many different types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

It is true that a rich variety of musical styles can be found around the world. Music is a vital part of all human cultures for a range of reasons, and I would argue that traditional music is more important than modern, international music.

a rich variety

a vital part

a range of reasons

Music is something that accompanies all of us throughout our lives. As children, we are taught songs by our parents and teachers as a means of learning language, or simply as a form of enjoyment. Children delight in singing with others, and it would appear that the act of singing in a group creates a connection between participants, regardless of their age. Later in life, people’s musical preferences develop, and we come to see our favourite songs as part of our life stories. Music both expresses and arouses emotions in a way that words alone cannot. In short, it is difficult to imagine life without it.

as a means of :

musical preferences:

In my opinion, traditional music should be valued over the international music that has become so popular. International pop music is often catchy and fun, but it is essentially a commercial product that is marketed and sold by business people. Traditional music, by contrast, expresses the culture, customs and history of a country. Traditional styles, such as ...(example)..., connect us to the past and form part of our cultural identity. It would be a real pity if pop music became so predominant that these national styles disappeared.

traditional music should be valued over the international music :

catchy

a commercial product

is marketed

It would be a real pity

predominant

In conclusion, music is a necessary part of human existence, and I believe that traditional music should be given more importance than international music.

IELTS Writing Task 1: avoid common mistakes

Here's some advice to help you avoid common mistakes in IELTS writing task 1:

  • Don't copy the question for your introduction. You should paraphrase the question (i.e. rewrite it using some different words).
  • Don't forget to separate your paragraphs clearly. [*=right]
    [*=right]
  • Don't forget to write a good summary/overview of the information. A quick one-sentence conclusion is not good enough. I prefer to put the overview straight after the introduction, and I try to write 2 sentences describing the information in general. You won't get a high score if you don't write a good overview. [*=right]

    [*=right]
  • Don't describe items separately (e.g. 2 lines on a graph). You should always try to compare things if it is possible to do so. Instead of describing 2 lines separately, compare the 2 lines at key points. [*=right]

  • Don't try to describe every number on a chart or graph (unless there are only a few numbers). A key skill in task 1 is being able to select the key information and describe or compare it well. I usually mention around 6 or 7 numbers in my main paragraphs.
    [*=right]
  • Don't spend longer than 20 minutes on task 1. Practise spending 5 minutes on each of your 4 paragraphs. Stop yourself after 20 minutes; remember that task 2 is worth more marks. [*=right]

[h=3]IELTS Writing Task 1: timing and introduction[/h] 20minutes is a very short amount of time, so you need to be very organised. I suggest breaking the 20 minutes into four parts, each lasting 5 minutes.

Part 1

First five minutes: read the question, understand it, underline key figures or trends, and write your one-sentence introduction.

Parts 2, 3 and 4

Five minutes for each paragraph: overview, details.

...

The diagram below shows the process by which bricks are manufactured for the building industry.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The process by which bricks are manufactured for the building industry can be outlined in seven consecutive steps.

be outlined

consecutive

First the raw material, clay, which was just below the surface of soil in certain clay-rich areas has to be dug up by a digger.

Then the lumps of clay are placed on a metal grid in order to break up the big chunks of clay into much smaller areas, which fall through the metal grid onto a roller, whose motion further segregates the bits of clay. Sand and water are added to make a homogeneous mixture, which is then either formed in moulds or cut into brick-shaped pieces by means of a wire cutter.

digger

lump:

metal grid

break up the big chunks of clay into much smaller areas

roller:

segregate

a homogeneous mixture

moulds

cut into brick-shaped pieces by means of a wire cutter

Those fresh bricks are then kept in a drying oven for at least 24 and a maximum of 48 hours, several dozen if not hundreds of bricks at a time. The dried bricks are then transferred to a so-called kiln, another type of high temperature oven. First they are kept at a moderate temperature of 200C – 1300C. This process is followed by cooling down the finished bricks for 48 to 72 hours in a cooling chamber.

Once the bricks have cooled down and have become hard, they get packaged and delivered to their final destination, be it a building site or storage.

Once the bricks have cooled down :

get packaged

(217 words)

be it a building site or storage :

Had I known ... = If I had known ...
Had he seen it, ... = If he had seen it, ...
Should you want me, ... = If you should want me, ... = If you wanted me, ...
Were I to say that, ... = If I were to say that, ... = If I said that, ...

Be he good or evil, ... = Whether he is good or evil, ...
Be it so or not, ... = Whether it is so or not, ...

If یا Whether حذف میشه ...

be it a building site or storage : یعنی Whether it is a building site or storage ..

Talk about your favorite month

    [*=left]Name of the month
[*=left]How the weather is during that month
[*=left]What you do in that month
    [*=left]Why you like that month

Well , to me all months of the year are beautiful , no matter how cold or hot they might be . But if I am to choose one among the 12 months as my favorite , I choose Farvardin which is the first month of spring and , in fact , the best time of the year with fantastic weather and lovely nature .

The weather is mild and pleasing and occasional rainfall makes the weather excellent . The sound of water in rivers as well as the freshness that you feel in the gardens and mountains are beyond description . Birds which come back from the south add to the beauty of this month , and there are numerous landscapes to watch and enjoy during this month .

During this month , people try to enjoy nature and the weather , and many plan their trips for this month . I like this month best because I think nature is trying to inspire people and give them hope to live . Another reason is that there is a tree in our yard that blossoms in this month and brings freshness to our home .

This is the month in which I feel the presence of God more than any other time . If I decide to take a trip once a year, I prefer to do it in Farvardin . I can say that this month of spring is capable of energizing us for the whole year . I wish it were Farvardin all year long !i

if I am to : یعنی اگر مجبور باشم انتخاب کنم ( این با I have to فرق داره ..

mild and pleasing

the presence of God : حضور خدا .

I wish it were Farvardin all year long !i : شاید بپرسید چرا Were اومده بجای Was ؟

Yes , I do. There's something really exciting about being out in the forest , sleeping in a tent and cooking food over the campfire. It's lovely to feel so close to nature . Unfortunately , I don't get much chance to do it .

Describe something you do to forget about work or study.

  • What the activity is
  • How often you do it
  • How it helps you forget
  • And say whether you would recommend other people try the same thing.

I’d like to talk about horse-riding, which has been my hobby since I was around ten years old. I’m actually the joint owner of a horse with two of my friends and we take turns looking after him, cleaning out the stable and so on.

I don’t have a part-time job so I spend most of my weekends at the stable. Taking care of a horse is quite a dirty business so it’s obviously very different from studying at college. That means I can forget about my classes during the week when I’m at the stable on the weekend.

There’s quite a large field next to the stable and I just get a wonderful sense of freedom when I’m riding around on my horse. College seems a million miles away!

Do I think other people would enjoy horse-riding? Yes, absolutely. I think everyone should give it a try. Horses are absolutely wonderful animals, very gentle and intelligent. If you ever have the chance to ride a horse, you should definitely give it a try.

    [*=left]What that activity was
[*=left]Where and how you did it
    [*=left]With whom you did it
    [*=left]Why you remember that activity

My favorite childhood activity was painting which I still enjoy doing . I went to a painting class twice a week when I was six . Mr. Roohi was my teacher who I liked very much ; he always encouraged me to continue painting because he thought I was talented and could have a promising future if I studied art at the university .

He instructed me patiently and I learned a lot in his classes . I learned to look at the world around me more carefully and draw whatever I like . I particularly remember the day when we started to learn how to draw geometric figures .

We were asked to practice how to draw them . It was very interesting because wherever I looked , I found a geometric figure which was composed of many other geometric figures . Those classes helped me later in school because I always got good marks in geometry and won the painting competition .

In addition , I always participated in artistic activities . Later , I came to understand that painting had somehow influenced my personal life ,too. A case in point in the time when I want to choose what clothes to wear or buy. Furthermore , this art helped me have a close relationship with nature and sense better the beauty that is sometimes hidden in the things around me .

.Speak about your favorite color

    [*=left]Name of the color
    [*=left]Why you like it
    [*=left]How you use this color

Well , I like blue best . Based on psychology ; blue associates with the inner nature of humans and symbolizes peace . It is the symbol of loyalty and loneliness . According to the research that I have done about the nature and history of this color, Picasso used blue when he was depressed . Dark blue is the symbol of decency because the sky is light and pure , and the earth on the contrary is dark and polluted .

It also is the symbol of fear , sadness and death . When it accompanies black , it refers to ignorance . In Latin America dark blue is commonly used in lamentations . it is believed that one of the goddesses in Aztec culture had blue arms and legs . Blue is the symbol of water , purity and honesty , and it refers to one of the goddesses in ancient Iran called Anahita .

Ribbons of bravery medals which are awarded to patriots for the appreciation of their services are blue . Scottish soldiers colored themselves blue because they thought it would frighten their enemies and mislead them . Islamic instructions have extensively advised to wear light color clothes , including blue , for blue is the color of water and heaven .

In conclusion , I should mention that people like different colors based on the memories they have from their infancy . When I want to choose a color for my bed sheets or the curtains in my house , blue is the color that i usually have in mind .

:Compare these 2 sentences

- The UK had the highest rate of unemployment.
- The unemployment rate was highest in the UK.

  • We use "the" when there is a noun after the adjective e.g. the highest number, the highest proportion.
  • When we put the noun before, we don't need "the" e.g. the number was highest, the proportion was highest.

.Think it out and guess , then look at the following post

259

The UK had the highest rate of unemployment. (the highest + noun)i
- The unemployment rate was highest in the UK. (noun before 'highest', no 'the')i

However, there might be an easier way to remember when to miss the word "the". We miss the word "the" when "highest" means "at its highest" or "at their highest" e.g. The unemployment rate was at its highest in the UK.

Let's try this with a few more examples:

1. Rainfall is highest in October. (Rainfall is at its highest in October)i
2. Temperatures are warmest in the south of the country. (at their warmest)i
3. Traffic is slowest between 7 and 9am. (at its slowest)i

In the above examples, don't put the word "the" before the superlative adjectives.

Superlatives can be used after possessive forms, without "the":i

  • My highest IELTS score was...
  • His fastest running time was...
  • Britain's oldest person is...

Miss "the" if the noun is before (not after) the superlative:i

  • The UK had the highest revenue from bananas. (noun after, use "the")i
  • Revenue from bananas was highest in the UK. (noun before, no "the")i

Miss "the" when the meaning is "at its..." or "at their...":i

  • Revenue from bananas was (at its) highest in the UK.
  • Temperatures are (at their) warmest in the south of the country.

A remarkable speech .. Click and watch ... :ok:i

The other thing about modern society and why it causes this anxiety, is that we have nothing at its center that is non-human. We are the first society to be living in a world where we don't worship anything other than ourselves. We think very highly of ourselves, and so we should; we've put people on the Moon, done all sorts of extraordinary things. And so we tend to worship ourselves. Our heroes are human heroes. That's a very new situation

[h=3]IELTS Writing Task 2: 'while' introductions[/h] If you want to mention both sides of the argument for an "agree or disagree" question, try including a 'while' sentence in your introduction.

Here's the 'while' sentence formula

"While I accept argument A, I favour argument B"

Here's an example question

Early technological developments helped ordinary people and changed their lives more than recent developments. To what extent do you agree or disagree?i

Here's my introduction

Technological progress has taken place throughout the course of human history. While early technologies certainly changed the lives of normal people, I believe that recent breakthroughs have had an even greater impact.

Take this question for example

Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. (Official IELTS Practice Materials 2)

Here's an example of a 'while' conclusion

In conclusion, while punishments can help to prevent bad driving, I believe that other road safety measures should also be introduced.

Note
The 'while' sentence makes it clear that I favour one side of the argument, but it allows me to mention both sides in the main body of my essay.

Many students overuse 'moreover', 'furthermore' and 'in addition'. Some students seem to think that using these linking words will help them to get a 7. This is wrong.

Don't overuse these words. Although they can be useful, you should not begin every sentence with one of them.Use them occasionally.

Remember, all IELTS students learn linking words like 'moreover', so examiners are not impressed by them. If you want to impress the examiner, you need to use good vocabulary related to the question topic.

Note

Don't forget to use the word 'and'. As native speakers, they probably use 'and' much more than any other linking word.
